Stegner

Paulinus Stegner (*1999 in Berlin) is a french horn player, trumpeter and composer from Leipzig. From 2019 to 2024 he studied music pedagogy and since 2024 horn in the master’s program with Prof. Thomas Hauschild at the Leipzig University of Music and Theater. He received further lessons from Jürgen Runge, Anne Mentzen and Bernhard Krug, and learned jazz improvisation and interpretation from Martin Auer and Antonia Hausmann. He received lessons in jazz arranging from Heiko Kulenkampff, Ralf Schrabbe & Henning Plankl as well as courses from Ansgar Striepens and Steven Feifke. He also learned classical arranging and composing at the university.

In Leipzig he is active in various ensembles – among others he is artistic co-director and co-organizer of The Bigband Messengers e. V. Paulinus Stegner was invited to perform as a guest soloist with the Concept Art Orchestra Prague under the direction of Štěpánka Balcarová at the German-Czech Cultural Days in Dresden in 2024. He works as an instrumental teacher at the Musikschule Neue Musik in Leipzig-Gohlis and is in demand as a lecturer at the Saxon Wind Music Association, among others.

He composes and arranges pieces for the horn octet and the university big band of the HMT Leipzig, the jouth jazzorchestra of saxony, the Spielvereinigung Süd and The Bigband-Messengers. He also devotes himself to composing for pure brass ensembles, especially for jazz horn quartets. In 2019, his band Easy Does It was awarded a concert prize for his compositions at the Bundesbegegnung Jugend Jazzt. In 2024, his composition Leaving MV – Jazz-Suite for Horn Quartet took first place at the international Beyond Borders French Horn Composition Competition.
